The symptoms of lactose intolerance

Lactose intolerance is a deficit in lactasethe digestive enzyme that breaks down lactose in assimilable sugars.

A lactose intolerant person who consumes lactose will only be able to digest it partially, if at all. This incomplete digestion causes a fermentation in the digestive tract and can cause the symptoms following :

- pain, abdominal cramps, stomach ache
– heartburn
- bloating
– gas
– diarrhoea
- in some cases: nausea, vomiting, constipation, migraines.

These symptoms generally appear between 15 minutes and 4 hours after ingestingfoods containing lactose.
